July 1st – The Tale of Two Games

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 looked a little gloomy when the alarm went off in the morning.  It drizzled most of the morning but cleared up in the afternoon and was “Mrs. H” by 5pm.  It was 74 degrees and sunny.  It was good to be back “home” (Neill) after a two month road trip.  There was no wind.  It was a brilliant night for two, save for the nats.

Game #1 vs. TC Crush

Slow pitch softball is a hitter’s game.  It is extremely difficult to win a slow pitch softball game when you only score one run.  The one run scored was actually fairly decent considering we only had four hits as a team.  Aside from Kurty’s four or five highlight stops / catches, there isn’t much worth discussing from this game.  We lost by the mercy rule 16-1.  Could the SFRC put 16 runs on the board in the next at bat?  Could we have rallied for a big win or made a game of it?  We will never know.  Pub Krull and CW both chased down a fly ball to right center, both could have caught and both let it drop.  Some would call it an error.  The FRC know that it was just our way of showing up TC Crush.  It was as if to say, we had TWO guys that could have made this play, but didn’t want to.  Take that!  J

Final score:   SFRC 1 – TC Crush 16

Plays of the game:

In the field: “Skin and Play” had three or four great diving backhanded stops at third and almost threw a guy out whilst he was on the ground and threw the ball backwards and underhand.  However, the best play was a blooper down the line that is the shortstop’s ball all day, except the FRC SS is the slowest guy on the team.  Kurty made a diving over the shoulder catch.  Great catch.  Honorable mention: CW bare-handing a line drive single that was coming in hot.  I think TC Crush was a bit intimidated by that play.

At the plate: Ol’ # 35 accounted for two of the FRC four hits.  Both of 35’s hits were smoked…absolute shots that are hits in any league at any level.  We were lucky the balls were still useable after those two hits.  Or were they two terrible swings that simply found the grass somehow?  I can’t remember.

Game #2 vs. Moose Knucklers

In typical FRC style, we would not let a Game #1 collapse impact our effort in Game #2.  The FRC made quick work defensively to start the game without allowing a run.  In the bottom of the first we were able to score three (two more than the first game).  The Moose Knucklers knew they were in trouble.  The FRC just weren’t going to lose two at home on this night.  There were runs scored virtually every inning by the FRC and the lead continued to grow.  Sans had a chance to pitch a shutout, but

Final score:   SFRC 12 – Moose Knucklers 2

Last out: ??

Plays of the game:

In the field:

1.      Matty tracking down a ton of fly balls in left center

2.      Brain throwing to 1st as Cinco jogged off the field since an inning ending double play had already been made

At the plate:  A number of two out hits.  Also CW with a few great softball swings and line drives up the middle.  Skin ‘n’ Play going off the pitcher twice.

Fans of the night:

The SFRC has a very solid showing of fans.  A big shout out to all of them (and especially Joanne for showing up early)!  Fan of the night may have to go to Oliver for attending his first game of the year.

Schlitz Beer Night (2-0, Numbers Don’t Lie)

Schlitz Beer Night!

Schlitz Beer Night!

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 looked a little gloomy as the sun came up.  It drizzled most of the morning, but as if Ma Nature new, she cleared up in the afternoon and was “Mrs. H” by 5pm.  It was 69 degrees (second week in a row) and sunny.  There was no wind.  A perfect night for two on the inaugural “Schlitz Beer Night.”

Game #1 vs. Moose Knucklers

The ho-hum from last week’s experiment at Lac Lavon carried over to start the game.  The SFRC trailed early 6-2.  In the top of the 6th we plated three to close the gap to 6-5.  In the bottom of the 6th Moose Knucklers found a ball that would travel for a solo homerun to extend the lead to 7-5.  But as the FRC are wont to do, we put together a rally in the top of the 7th and scored six to take an 11-7 lead.  It was like a Mike Tyson upper-cut landed right on the Moose Knucklers’ chin.  They had no fight left in them and quickly went down 1-2-3 to end the game.

Final score:   SFRC 11 – Moose Knucklers 7

Last out: ??

Plays of the game:

In the field: Ol’ number 35 took a throw from Matty in left-center and sent the relay almost over the dugout.

At the plate: Leader, leader, leader in the top of the 7th on their way to six runs and the lead.

Game #2 vs. Booze Bros

The SFRC need to find a way to lock it down early.  We fell behind again giving up six runs in the top of the 1st inning.  If there is one thing that has been consistent over the years it is the fact that there is no quit in the FRC.  We answered with three runs of our own.  The game was back and forth for a couple more innings, until……The FRC pulled out an old trick and hit Booze Bros in the mind.  We got in their heads and they committed error after error.  We took advantage of the opportunity and jumped to a big lead.  We never looked back and the Booze Bros couldn’t regroup.

Final score:   SFRC 17 – Booze Bros 8

Last out: Pub Krull sliding into 3rd base

Plays of the game:

In the field:  Highlights all around.

1.      Pub Krull with a running / diving catch five feet behind the second baseman

2.      Gimp getting leather on a line drive, then securing the out with his bare hand (not a play that is made in the < 30, one-armed league)

3.      Gimp charging a ball, scooping it barehanded and firing to first for the out

4.      35 somehow actually got a jump on a ball and dove to make a game-ending catch on a line drive.  No one on, two outs up nine in the top of the 7th?  That is CLUTCH.

At the plate:  Cinco launching a “no-doubter” for his first HR of the season.  Cinco has always been a “week before Flag day” kind of player.  Numbers don’t lie.

Fans of the night:

Patsy and TO, per the norm.  Also, a VERY BIG shout out to our friends at Schlitz Beer.  The FRC are 2-0 with Schlitz onsite.  Numbers don’t lie.  We’d love to continue to pattern.  Win or lose we can commit to enjoying the fine taste of suds by Schlitz if it is available.

Cinco – Juan

The 1984 Minnesota Northstars had Willie Plett. The 2009 SFRC have “CINCO-JUAN…” a.k.a. “The Intimidator.”

A Gorgeous Night Wasted

In the world of softball weather, you can’t make up days any better than Wednesday, June 3, 2009.  69 degrees, not a cloud in the sky and an ever so faint breeze blowing out.  It was simply a gorgeous night for two.  “Mrs. H,” if you will.

We missed out on the presence of Lars Sr. due to a potentially bad Council Bluffs sandwich.  It was an unfortunate mishap indeed.  Numbers don’t lie, we don’t lose in the presence of Lars Sr.  We did, however, have a full crew of SFRC faithful.  The Brain family, TO, Patsy and ____, and Mrs. Cinco along with the debut of Poco Cinco.

The downside is that the FRC were flat.  Flat from the get-go.  The result was an 0-2 evening at the “now-so-foreign” Lac Lavon.

Game #1 vs. “Sons of Varmits”

The first pitch was thrown at exactly 7:00pm Walt time (generally more accurate than GMT).  The SFRC started playing at about 7:09pm.  The FRC allowed 11 to cross the plate in the top of the 1st.  But in typical FRC fashion, we plated nine of our own in the bottom of the 1st to make it a two run game.  However, the FRC booted the ball and threw the ball all over the field on their way to a 14-21 loss to the “Sons of Varmits.”

There is no excuse for us losing to this team.  Not when it is the senior players, nor the JV squad that played on June 3rd.

There were many K’s, pop outs, double plays, etc.  In fact, I think the game ended on a double play.  YUCK.

Final score:   SFRC 14 – Varmits 21

Plays of the game:

In the field: None.

At the plate: None.

Game #2 vs. H-Bomb

We were back and forth with H-Bomb again.  This seems to happen every time we play them.  H-Bomb’s did have 10 players for possible the first time in their franchise’s history.  With Walt behind the dish anything can happen.  The SFRC found a way to stay in this game for awhile.  The wind was blowing out to center on Field A, but no HRs were hit be either team.  The FRC left the bases loaded twice and the FRC shortstop booted a few balls and left his thinker in the dugout on a lineout, and let the runner on third score.  You really don’t see a “SAC” on an F6 too often.  Especially when the ball never left the infield.

Final score:   SFRC 10 – H-Bombs 15

Last out: ???

Plays of the game:

In the field:  A  minor collision between the rookie right-fielder and the more rookie right center-fielder.

At the plate:  Pub of HGH Krull again showing off his power.

Fans of the night:

We can’t thank the fans enough for their support.  At one point a blow horn and some wind won you fan of the game, see here.  However, that has been out done.  It is no longer an easy award to win.  The competition was stiff last week.  However, if there was ever a guarantee, it happened on June 3, 2009.  Poco Cinco made his SFRC debut and for that, he automatically wins FAN OF THE GAME!

Red Beans and Sausage

It was a gorgeous night for two (save for the 40+ mph wind gusts).  Numbers don’t lie, the FRC have never been a great team with the fans blowing.  It was nice to see Paht arrive just in time to hit a la Timmy, circa 1998.  There is a link to the schedule on the right or click here.  It includes dates, times AND believe it or not, FIELD LOCATIONS.  I will say, my mind does try to drive to SFRCP on Wednesdays when I am on auto-pilot.

It was great to close the fields down around midnight and hear stories of “red beans and sausage.”  As the saying goes, “You say poe-TAE-toe, I say poe-TA-toe.”  If you miss the humor, I’d highly recommend sticking around for the post game recaps and beverages.  You never know what you’ll hear.

We have next week off and the Varmits and H-Bombs will have to feel the wrath of a healthy, well rested SFRC squad on June 3rd.  Worth mentioning…These games are at 6pm and 7pm on June 3rd, 2009 at LAC LAVON!!!

Stats are updated here.  Or, you can always find the link at the top of the page.

Game #1 vs. Booze Bros.

With the spotlight in our eyes at the plate it made hitting the first two innings an adventure (see the number of K’s recorded).  The game was back and forth with the wind blowing straight in from left field.  In the 5th the FRC got it going and took a decent lead.  We held them in the top of the 6th and went on to score more in the bottom of the 6th inning.

There was some confusion when Booze Bros. wanted an infield fly call, but didn’t get it.  They were also fired up when Sans tried to use his “veteraness” (as Trent Tucker would say) and get a runner after Brain made an out.  The Booze Bros. challenged this call with rule book in hand.  That negative energy worked against them as Matty came through with a big two out hit that scored two.

Final score:   SFRC 17 – Booze Bros. 7

Last out: Mac

Plays of the game:

In the field: We turned a couple of solid double plays.

At the plate: Pub Krull in no man’s land when he thought there was an infield fly rule called, only to find out there wasn’t.

Game #2 vs. TC Crush

Final score:   SFRC 10 – TC Crush 20

Last out: Matty

Plays of the game:

In the field:  We turned a couple more double plays.

At the plate:  Sans stayed hot….and got a few hits too.

Fan (IR fan) of the night:

Todd O.  Softball is always a bit more fun when OB is onsite.
