Opening Night

  • No dates present

Official Start Date

April 28, 2010 6:00pm vs. H-Bombs at Alimagnet Field B.

I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get SCHLITZ GUSTO GUYS in all CAPS, but I’m happy to see the name change.  The end of the season will have a little different feel to it since we won’t be playing Varmits or Varmit Jrs.  We may also have to celebrate processed food night a week early at Lac Lavon, since the last week of the year we have late games.  That is okay.  The last time we had PFN at LL we had a very strong showing to help celebrate.

I am ready and excited.  We begin to taper our workouts now so we are at our peak on April 28, 2010 at 6:00pm.

Love it!

Book the FRC for 2010!

It’s official, we are registered for the highly competitive Wednesday evening D/E Recreational DOUBLE HEADER league.  Okay, highly competitive may be a little aggressive.  We do know we have double headers every Wednesday evening.  We’d like to officially welcome back Greg Silkey to the FRC team.  He will immediately pickup his role from his last stint with the FRC of Skyline, owner of the “Kangaroo Court.”  For those who are unaware of this “Kangaroo Court,” it’s purpose is to assign penalties (beverages) for various softball mishaps (three fly balls, strikeouts, etc.).  Welcome back, Greg.

Upon seeing the news that we have added a “Greg” to our previous roster of existing “Greg’s,” the following comment was made (and immediately put into the Quotes Archive):

“Heavy on the Greg’s this year.  Sounds like runs…”

Clearly the off-season workout program is in full swing.  This is mid-season form.  You come up with lines like this only whilst running the hills at SFRCP in January.

Heads Held High After Going 0-2

After a Week #1 rainout (at Lac Lavon), we have seen nothing but nice weather at SFRCP (numbers don’t lie).  We had 12 leaders ready to play ball on this evening that could only be described as Mrs. H.

Game #1 vs. The Replacements

The Replacements started with nine bodies and the FRC took advantage of the opportunity by scoring three early runs.  The game was back and forth throughout.  The FRC definitely gave The Replacements some free outs.  35 let a few go by, the outfield let a few go by and so it is in D/E Recreational softball.  The FRC kept their heads high, won the mental game and were in it until the end, coming up just short.  The ageless Walt was managing the field and influencing the game, as he is wont to do.  There were quite a few close plays and surprisingly I think Walt got most of them correct.

Final Score: SFRC 8 – The Replacements 10

Play of the game: Sans sending a limping Aaron Rogers out to RC only to be called back in to play first base.

Last out: CW??

Game #2 vs. TC Crush

A much anticipated showdown from two weeks ago when some bad blood was brewing.  I will tip my hat to TC Crush as they left that history alone.  Unfortunately, Aaron Roger had to hang it up after Game #1 due to a 50 year old hamstring.  It was a solid game for the FRC against a short-handed team.  Again, we didn’t play our best defensive game, but that will happen.  One thing that remains constant, the FRC have fun.  Per the norm, the SFRC stuck around and enjoyed some ice cold beverages after the game.

Final Score: SFRC 14 – TC Crush 16

Play of the game: Sans, like a large preying cat, snagged a line drive up the middle.

Fan of the night:

Bridget, attending her third week in a row is a valid candidate.  Patsy attending her first fall game after a solid summer showing is also a solid candidate.  However, TO wins the prize.  It’s always good to have TO at the ball park!

Autumn Balm

Autumn Ball continues to serve up the humidity…the balm….the cheese.  It was 70 degrees, clear skies and a heat index into the upper 80’s I’m sure.

Game #1 vs. Property Claim Solutions

It was the SFRC vs. eight bodies from Property Claim Solutions.  That eighth person just made in time to avoid the forfeit.  This was good for everyone.  The FRC didn’t take advantage of the lack of fielders as they should have.  We only pushed three runs in the top of the 1st inning.  PCS came back with two of their own.  By the top of the 2nd inning, they had 10 fielders.  That’s okay, as the SFRC have never been a team that wanted to be gift-wrapped any victories.  We are willing to earn them.  The game went back and forth with PCS scoring more than the FRC through five innings.  In the top of the 6th the ump gave the “10 minutes left” call.  Ol’ 35 ended the FRC mini-rally by getting thrown out at 3rd base (NEVER make the first or last out at 3rd).  In the bottom of the 6th with the clock ticking PCS ran the softball equivalent of “the four corners.”  They were slow to walk up to the plate, slow to figure out who was “up,” slow to swing the bat, etc.  No matter, the defense locked it down when they needed to and got the three outs fairly quickly.  It was 13-10 heading into the top of the 7th.  We scratched and clawed our way to two runs.  With runners and 2nd and 3rd and one out Matty hit the hardest ball of the night.  Unfortunately, in 2009 we are not the only ones with a film room.  PCS had Matty played just right and their shortstop snagged the line drive.  And with two outs as the saying goes, even a blind squirrel finds a nut….blindsquirrel

35 somehow managed to hit one over to center for a three run HR and a two run lead (15-13).  MW and company continued the rally and we went on to score three more runs.  These were big as we gave up two runs in the bottom of the 7th, but again locked it down when we needed to and won the game.  Big comeback for the SFRC.

Final Score: SFRC 18 – Property Claim Solutions 15

Play of the game: Brain knocking down a ground ball and turning to fire the runner out at 1st.

Last out: CP (they just beat him to first base on a fluke play)

Game #2 vs. Almost All-Stars

Sometimes a team is just better than you.  Almost All-Stars is simply better than the SFRC.  They are a good group of KIDS and they are fun to play against.  They play the game the right way and look like they are enjoying themselves.  In 25-30 years maybe they will still be playing.  Maybe they will be playing at the level of the 2009 version of the SFRC.  In two years, maybe they will be old enough to have a beer when they play.

We scored early avoiding the dreaded shutout.  We just couldn’t put enough hits together.  We were probably 20-25 hits short in game #2.  There were some nice plays made in the field, but they simply hit the ball too well to make this a competitive game.

Final Score: SFRC 6 – Almost All-Stars 24

Play of the game: 2’s making a nice catch down the right field line and attempting a triple play.

Last out: Brain (even with the grunt)

Fan of the night:

Bridget (did I get the name right?) for the second week in a row.  At this point in Autumn ball, she is making an outstanding case for Autumn Fan of the Year.   That is not an easy award to earn.

Words heard at SFRCP on 9/16/09:

Them: Hey, this guy is a switch hitter!

Us: Yeah, he bats left-handed and right-handed too.

Catcher: Big stick here.  This guy has a big stick.

Fielders: This guy is a good hitter too.

Bench: Nice sac, 2’s.  Great sac….Good time for an RBI too.

Leader: We named our dog Darrin.

Leader: If he gets taken out at the knees, he’ll be running in the pool.

Bad Mojo Hanging over SFRCP

We should have expected it.  We should have known.  Red wanted to call the games before they had even started.  Red on “SFRCP Away” (a.k.a. Neill, Field B) came all the way over to SFRCP (a.k.a. Neill Field A) to try to get the games called.  He even tried to play the “I don’t want to see someone get hurt and then call the game” card.  Really?  Now the umpires are worried about safety?  Games at Alimagnet can be played with every leaf in Minnesota falling on the field with four inches of rain in less than an hour, but now the umpires are worried about safety when the infield isn’t even wet yet?  C’mon.  The SFRC have simply played too many games on too many nights over too many years to be taken for a “There are red cells in Prior Lake…This guy just talked to his wife and said it was down pouring in Prior Lake” argument.  Honestly, has “Mrs. Red” ever been to SFRCP?  Does she know bad weather simply disappears when it gets to SFRCP?  The leaders (read ALL SFRC ball players) have 15 years and roughly 500 games of experience at Neill.  Less than a year ago there were tornado sirens going off by Burnsville Mall, there were flood warnings on 35W, and there were blue skies over Neill.  That’s just how it works.  Even as it started to drizzle at 7:58pm I would have bet both Reds and Mrs. Red that we would get two games in on 9-9-09.  The weather people and the umpires can make all the claims they want about weather patterns and Doppler radars, but the fact of the matter is, NUMBERS DON’T LIE.  That’s how the farmer’s almanac was written.  Based on facts.  Two rainouts in 500 games, 0.004% of our games at Neill have been called due to weather.  The FRC simply couldn’t overcome all of that negatively energy surrounding SFRCP.

Let’s play two!

Game #1 vs. TC Crush

Shocker, the rain stopped and the humidity stayed by the second inning of Game #1.

The FRC scratched and clawed their way to an early lead and it looked like this might be the game to upset TC Crush.  But of course, 3-5 threw a ball in the dirt which lead to a seven run inning for TC Crush and took the wind out of our sails.  The game turned ugly both physically and verbally as TC Crush started trying to go up the middle.  They thought they could pick on Sans.  The SFRCP Gods won’t allow it and immediately took 15 years off of Sans person and he made most every play up the middle (with an assist to Brain on the final out).  Sans was like a cat.  A large preying cat.  A panther.  A tiger.  Sans.  For any TC Crush players reading this, I hope you know there is a difference between a couple ground balls up the middle and 10 line drives up the middle to a 50 year old pitcher.   F’em.

In the end, we didn’t have enough.  We couldn’t put enough runs together after TC Crush found a 10th player.  We took it on the chin and lost by 10 or so.

Pauly, Steve and Nellie were welcome additions.  And surprisingly 35 went 4-5.

Play of the Game: A line shot up the middle off of Sans leather and into Brain’s glove for a F-1-4.

Game #2 vs. White T-Shirts

Maybe the Red didn’t like Ol’ 35’s call of “I think we should call the game.  I hear there are red cells in Prior Lake” when he approached the field.  9-9-09 at 9pm.  Whoa…get ready.

The FRC jumped to an early 6-2 lead after two innings of clutch hits and Texas Leaguers.  Defensively we were not as fortunate.  After booting an easy double play ball, 35 picked up the ball standing on the base, but the red called the runner safe.  Two plays later red made a call worthy of D/E Recreational softball by botching an interference call.  And the flood gates opened.  15 runs and thick fog later the FRC found themselves trailing by too many to mount a comeback.  Thanks Red.

The fog was so thick you could hardly see Field A and fly balls to the outfield were nearly impossible to read.  As thick as the fog was, it was not a fraction of the thickness of the balm.  She was PLENTY humid on 9-9-09 at 9pm.  Potentially 99% humidity.  It was all but raining.  Read that again Red…IT WAS NOT RAINING.

CW ended 4-4 in Game #2 and 2’s had (and probably still has) a nice sac….and an RBI on a pop fly too.

Play of the Game: Steve scoops a ground ball throws to Brain at second for one out.  Brain turns and hurls to the plate for Paht to make a tag and the double play was made.

Fans of the night:

MW’s guest braving out the potential bad weather and staying for two!  I love it.  Even a guest, who as far as I know was an SFRCP virgin knew the weather wouldn’t claim this night.  Not on 9-9-09.  Not at SFRCP.  STICK IT Red!!
