There is No Quit in the Gusto Guys

We’ve been waiting for a night like May 19^th. It was “Mrs. H.” The temperature at game time was about 74 degrees and sunny, with very little breeze. May 19^th is a good day for a few reasons. It is Kevin Garnett’s birthday. May 19, 2010 is the 6^th anniversary of one of the greatest Game 7 performances in NBA history. KG went off for 32 points, 21 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals and 5 blocks in an 83-80 Timberwolves win.

May 19, 2010 was also a night where the Schlitz Gusto Guys did what they do. Hit, run, hit, run, make plays, hit some more, come back from trailing, and potentially most importantly, shut down the field at around 11:15pm after finishing our last Schlitz Tall Boys. Delicious.

Game #1 vs. Beer Me

First and foremost we’d like to recognize our opponents as fellow Schlitz Tall Boy drinkers. It was nice to see another squad with Schlitz Tall Boys enjoying some D/E Class softball on a beautiful evening. The game was back and forth throughout. The Shlitz Gusto Guys took an early 3-1 lead and extended it to 4-1 by the 4^th inning. Beer Me put a run of their own together and took the lead 9-8 heading into the top of the 7^th. The Gusto Guys have no quit in them. Heard as we approached the dugout, “We need two to take the lead.” We have been over this before, but you will never hear “one to tie” from a Gusto Guy dugout. We are more optimistic. It is simply “Two to lead” or “Two to win” for us. And so, we went on a hit parade. Leader = Single, Leader = Single, Leader = Single, Leader = Single, Leader = Single, Leader = Single, Leader = Single….One at a time the Gusto Guys stepped up got a hit and moved the runners, got a hit and scored a runner. As we took the field in the bottom of the 7^th we were up 13-9. We locked them down and completed the win.

Beer Me was more than just a little impressed / jealous of the Schlitz uniforms. The Gusto Guys were looking GOOD!

Sans hit well and Cinco made his 2010 debut without getting out.

Game #2 vs. Televant

We witnessed a SFRC / Schlitz Gusto Guy first. Please read the next sentence slowly and make sure you understand the significance…..Sans started Game #2 on May 19, 2010 with a Snapper Mow’em down inning. Yes, he struck out the side. He struck out batters 1, 2 and 3. This may not have only been a SFRC / Schlitz Gusto Guy first, this might be a first for the State of Minnesota.

The Gusto Guys jumped to an early lead 14-1 after three innings. Televant mounted an impressive comeback and plated 10 in the top of the fourth. Hanging on to a 14-11 lead, the Schlitz Gusto Guys did what they do….hit, hit, hit, hit and score, hit and score, hit and score, hit and score and on and on and on. We pushed 10 of our own.

Cinco had his first homerun of the year (see quote page for more details).

Heads Held High After Going 0-2

After a Week #1 rainout (at Lac Lavon), we have seen nothing but nice weather at SFRCP (numbers don’t lie). We had 12 leaders ready to play ball on this evening that could only be described as Mrs. H.

Game #1 vs. The Replacements

The Replacements started with nine bodies and the FRC took advantage of the opportunity by scoring three early runs. The game was back and forth throughout. The FRC definitely gave The Replacements some free outs. 35 let a few go by, the outfield let a few go by and so it is in D/E Recreational softball. The FRC kept their heads high, won the mental game and were in it until the end, coming up just short. The ageless Walt was managing the field and influencing the game, as he is wont to do. There were quite a few close plays and surprisingly I think Walt got most of them correct.

Game #2 vs. TC Crush

A much anticipated showdown from two weeks ago when some bad blood was brewing. I will tip my hat to TC Crush as they left that history alone. Unfortunately, Aaron Roger had to hang it up after Game #1 due to a 50 year old hamstring. It was a solid game for the FRC against a short-handed team. Again, we didn’t play our best defensive game, but that will happen. One thing that remains constant, the FRC have fun. Per the norm, the SFRC stuck around and enjoyed some ice cold beverages after the game.

Play of the game: Sans, like a large preying cat, snagged a line drive up the middle.

Bridget, attending her third week in a row is a valid candidate. Patsy attending her first fall game after a solid summer showing is also a solid candidate. However, TO wins the prize. It’s always good to have TO at the ball park!

Schlitz Beer Night (2-0, Numbers Don’t Lie)

Schlitz Beer Night!

Wednesday, June 10^th, 2009 looked a little gloomy as the sun came up. It drizzled most of the morning, but as if Ma Nature new, she cleared up in the afternoon and was “Mrs. H” by 5pm. It was 69 degrees (second week in a row) and sunny. There was no wind. A perfect night for two on the inaugural “Schlitz Beer Night.”

Game #1 vs. Moose Knucklers

The ho-hum from last week’s experiment at Lac Lavon carried over to start the game. The SFRC trailed early 6-2. In the top of the 6^th we plated three to close the gap to 6-5. In the bottom of the 6^th Moose Knucklers found a ball that would travel for a solo homerun to extend the lead to 7-5. But as the FRC are wont to do, we put together a rally in the top of the 7^th and scored six to take an 11-7 lead. It was like a Mike Tyson upper-cut landed right on the Moose Knucklers’ chin. They had no fight left in them and quickly went down 1-2-3 to end the game.

In the field: Ol’ number 35 took a throw from Matty in left-center and sent the relay almost over the dugout.

At the plate: Leader, leader, leader in the top of the 7^th on their way to six runs and the lead.

Game #2 vs. Booze Bros

The SFRC need to find a way to lock it down early. We fell behind again giving up six runs in the top of the 1^st inning. If there is one thing that has been consistent over the years it is the fact that there is no quit in the FRC. We answered with three runs of our own. The game was back and forth for a couple more innings, until……The FRC pulled out an old trick and hit Booze Bros in the mind. We got in their heads and they committed error after error. We took advantage of the opportunity and jumped to a big lead. We never looked back and the Booze Bros couldn’t regroup.

Final score: SFRC 17 – Booze Bros 8

In the field: Highlights all around.

1. Pub Krull with a running / diving catch five feet behind the second baseman

2. Gimp getting leather on a line drive, then securing the out with his bare hand (not a play that is made in the < 30, one-armed league)

3. Gimp charging a ball, scooping it barehanded and firing to first for the out

4. 35 somehow actually got a jump on a ball and dove to make a game-ending catch on a line drive. No one on, two outs up nine in the top of the 7^th? That is CLUTCH.

At the plate: Cinco launching a “no-doubter” for his first HR of the season. Cinco has always been a “week before Flag day” kind of player. Numbers don’t lie.

Patsy and TO, per the norm. Also, a VERY BIG shout out to our friends at Schlitz Beer. The FRC are 2-0 with Schlitz onsite. Numbers don’t lie. We’d love to continue to pattern. Win or lose we can commit to enjoying the fine taste of suds by Schlitz if it is available.

A Gorgeous Night Wasted

In the world of softball weather, you can’t make up days any better than Wednesday, June 3, 2009. 69 degrees, not a cloud in the sky and an ever so faint breeze blowing out. It was simply a gorgeous night for two. “Mrs. H,” if you will.

We missed out on the presence of Lars Sr. due to a potentially bad Council Bluffs sandwich. It was an unfortunate mishap indeed. Numbers don’t lie, we don’t lose in the presence of Lars Sr. We did, however, have a full crew of SFRC faithful. The Brain family, TO, Patsy and ____, and Mrs. Cinco along with the debut of Poco Cinco.

The downside is that the FRC were flat. Flat from the get-go. The result was an 0-2 evening at the “now-so-foreign” Lac Lavon.

Game #1 vs. “Sons of Varmits”

The first pitch was thrown at exactly 7:00pm Walt time (generally more accurate than GMT). The SFRC started playing at about 7:09pm. The FRC allowed 11 to cross the plate in the top of the 1^st. But in typical FRC fashion, we plated nine of our own in the bottom of the 1^st to make it a two run game. However, the FRC booted the ball and threw the ball all over the field on their way to a 14-21 loss to the “Sons of Varmits.”

There is no excuse for us losing to this team. Not when it is the senior players, nor the JV squad that played on June 3^rd.

There were many K’s, pop outs, double plays, etc. In fact, I think the game ended on a double play. YUCK.

Game #2 vs. H-Bomb

We were back and forth with H-Bomb again. This seems to happen every time we play them. H-Bomb’s did have 10 players for possible the first time in their franchise’s history. With Walt behind the dish anything can happen. The SFRC found a way to stay in this game for awhile. The wind was blowing out to center on Field A, but no HRs were hit be either team. The FRC left the bases loaded twice and the FRC shortstop booted a few balls and left his thinker in the dugout on a lineout, and let the runner on third score. You really don’t see a “SAC” on an F6 too often. Especially when the ball never left the infield.

We can’t thank the fans enough for their support. At one point a blow horn and some wind won you fan of the game, see here. However, that has been out done. It is no longer an easy award to win. The competition was stiff last week. However, if there was ever a guarantee, it happened on June 3, 2009. Poco Cinco made his SFRC debut and for that, he automatically wins FAN OF THE GAME!

June 4th Recap

The SFRC checked the calendar, noticed it was post-Memorial Day and got after it in Game 1. Hits came with no outs, hits came with one out and, in typical PMD (post-Memorial Day) fashion for the FRC, hits came with two outs. Even Walt couldn’t get us to stop hitting. The starting pitcher for Lucky 13′s / LaFonda’s tried to pull out all of the junk early in the game. Knuckle balls, pitches with back spin, standing and throwing from the side of the mound, fake pitching, etc. were all thrown to the PMDSFRC (post-Memorial Day Skyline Fighting Red C’s). Per the norm, the FRC’s just swung away. Hit after hit after hit. There weren’t too batters that reached base on errors. Most of the base runners had legitimate hits. There were some winded base-runners throughout the game. With Kurt up and Sans at first, #4 hit a shot down the left-field line. Sans started motoring and kept going. CP made a good point, I think #0 thought Walt and the FRC bench was yelling “Fall Ball,” in reference to having our coach and manager sign us up for the fall league. Really, we were really FOUL ball. Easy mistake. In the end the FRC tallied 27 runs and won on the 15-run rule 27-10, I believe.

Game 2 vs. Varmit’s didn’t go as well. The sun came out and Lars showed up. After scoring 27 runs in the first game, the FRC only managed four in the second game. The FRC never play VP very well. It may have to do with the fact that we are a high energy, high paced team. The VP does everything in slow motion. The FRC took it on the chin and lost 5-4. We don’t blame Lars though. Anytime the Miracle Whip cooler is in hand, Lars is welcome. Take care of those ribs!

Overall it was a gorgeous night for two. Some may say it was “Mrs. H” out.

NOTE: If you are wondering where “Mrs. H” comes from…It is the introduction to the old TV show “Heart to Heart.” The Opening Narrative…”This is my boss, Jonathan Hart, a self-made millionaire. He’s quite a guy. This is Mrs. H, she’s gorgeous. What a terrivic lady. By the way, my name’s Max. I take care of ‘em, which ain’t easy, ’cause their hobby is murder.”
